Cherry Blanket Chest

This blanket chest was made as a joint effort between me and Ron Lawhon, the Minister of Music at my church as a wedding gift for his oldest daughter, Christa.  The entire project was really a joint effort between lot of people in our Church.  For example, the cherry lumber was given to Ron from a member of the church.  It came from a tree on his property that fell several years ago.  The lumber was sawed by a friend of his on a steam powered sawmill made in the late 1800's that is set up at a local museum (the Georgia Agrirama).  After the cherry air dried for several years, a portion of it was made into this blanket chest by Ron and myself.

The chest is 42" wide, 18" deep and 27" high. Joinery is hand cut through dovetails all the way around.  The top and drawer front have an inlaid walnut band.  The finish is one coat of Watco Danish Oil (Medium Walnut), six coats of hand rubbed Waterlox, and then a hand coat of wax.
